Parekura Centre

The Parekura Centre caters for students with intellectual disabilities.

Our aim is to provide a caring, supportive environment and opportunities for personal, social and academic development.  The students learn skills for living and working in the community.

All students have an Individual Education Plan, formulated in consultation with them and their families. These plans are reviewed and revised twice a year.

The classes are small and targeted at the student's learning level. There are two teachers and four teacher aides who provide in-class support and run small learning groups.

The Parekura students take part in a variety of activities throughout the year.

  • They look after an area of land on the banks of the Opanuku stream which they have transformed from a wasteland.
  • They take part in four Special Olympics Ribbon Days each year - Athletics, Soccer, Ten Pin Bowling and Basketball
  • They have their own vegetable garden

Parekura is a safe and welcoming environment for special needs students.  They feel at home and enjoy coming to school each day.
