Letter from Board Chairperson
On behalf of the Henderson High School Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Purcell as the school's new Principal. I believe the school is fortunate to have attracted a Principal of this calibre.
Mr Purcell is an outstanding leader in education and brings to Henderson a wealth of experience of co-educational, multi-cultural secondary school management. He has proven success as principal at two other New Zealand secondary schools which are very similar to Henderson High School. He is highly respected in the education sector, with specialist teacher training qualifications and two Masters' degrees. He is also a competitive sportsman, having played rugby to senior level and is continuing to win tennis matches against much younger opponents.
As a Board, we are impressed with Mr Purcell's vision, integrity and vigour, and we know he will be an innovative administrator with a strong sense of compassion, fair-mindedness and humour. It is clear, though, that his first, over-riding priority is to lift academic achievement across the school.
He comes to Henderson with expectations of maintaining sound traditional values, setting high standards of discipline and ensuring students are well taught, with ample opportunity to achieve their full potential. All schools have academic, social, cultural, sporting and moral obligations and Mr Purcell wants to combine this focus with ensuring all students do as well as they possibly can in their chosen subjects.
Henderson High School has many strengths and an impressive choice of subjects, catering for the mainstream core education but also offering a variety of non-traditional subjects on the Curriculum Framework.
Mr Purcell, with his wife Tracy, who is a secondary school teacher, and their son Rhett, a gifted tennis player, has recently returned to New Zealand after working and sports coaching in Britain.
We are satisfied that Mr Purcell has the energy, knowledge, commitment and leadership qualities to guide Henderson High School successfully through any future challenges and into the next stage of development.
